We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD student to study the impact of global warming on stream communities as part of a new joint project between the Biology Centre CAS in České Budějovice and Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic. The successful candidate will conduct experiments in artificial stream microcosms and investigate thermal tolerance and thermal performance curves of multiple stream insect species.

The student will join our group at the University of South Bohemia and the Biology Centre CAS and enrol in an ecology/hydrobiology PhD program at the Faculty of Science, University of South Bohemia (https://prf.jcu.cz/en/). He/she will also cooperate with Prof. Michal Horsák’s group at Masaryk University in Brno (https://botzool-hydra.netlify.app/), and with Dr. Simon Vitecek at WasserCluster Lunz, Austria (https://www.wcl.ac.at/). He/she will receive a PhD scholarship for four years from the University of South Bohemia and a part-time contract in the ongoing grant project, sufficient to cover living costs in Czechia.

The campus in České Budějovice is located in a relaxed city of about 100,000 inhabitants, within easy reach of Prague and Vienna. The student will be immersed in a multinational research environment and work in a highly competitive research group that regularly publishes in top-tier journals and maintains an international research network. The student will conduct part of the experiments at WasserCluster Lunz, a leading limnological research centre affiliated with three Austrian partner universities.

Basic qualifications for the position include a Master's degree or equivalent in ecology, entomology or hydrobiology and a strong interest in experimental and quantitative ecology. Desirable qualifications include previous experience with laboratory or field experiments with aquatic invertebrates (including scientific publications) and statistical analyses in R.
